Signature background and contrast guide.
A signature upload is judged by the ink, the canvas, and the file rule. The best result is usually a dark signature on a clean light background, cropped close enough to remove empty paper while leaving a small margin.
Start with a clean source
Use dark blue or black ink on plain white paper. Avoid ruled notebook lines, folded paper, shadows, and glossy surfaces. The cleaner the source, the less compression is needed later.
If the signature was photographed, retake it under even light before editing. A tool can crop and compress, but it cannot fully recover missing ink strokes from a blurred source.
Crop around the ink, not the page
Large white margins make the signature look tiny after resizing. Crop close to the ink first, then set the required dimensions such as 140x60 pixels or another size listed by the form.
Leave a small margin so the first and last strokes are not cut. After resizing, check initials, dots, loops, and underline strokes at the final size.
Choose a safe background color
Most official forms expect a white or very light background. A transparent background may look fine in one viewer and dark or gray in another. If the portal does not mention transparency, use a solid white background.
Background color matters most when the source has gray paper or shadows. Replacing the background with clean white can make the signature easier to read and often helps compression.
Compress only after dimensions are final
A 20 KB limit is easier to meet after the signature is cropped and resized. Compressing a full camera photo before resizing wastes effort and can create artifacts that remain in the final small file.
Use the preview before download. If strokes look broken or the ink becomes pale, reduce compression or return to a better source image.
Common questions
Should my signature background be transparent?
Use transparent only when the receiving website explicitly allows it. White is safer for most official upload forms.
Why does my signature become blurry under 20 KB?
The source may be too large, poorly cropped, faint, or shadowed. Crop and resize first, then apply the lightest compression that meets the limit.
What size should a signature be?
Follow the receiving form. Common examples include 140x60 pixels, but different portals use different dimensions and KB limits.
Continue with the right tool
After checking the rule, choose the tool that changes only what needs to change. That keeps the final file easier to inspect and reduces the chance of creating a smaller file that the receiving website still rejects.
Open PDF tools
Compress, merge, protect, split, extract, or convert PDF pages after you understand the upload rule.
Open image resizer
Crop photos and signatures, set exact dimensions, select background color, and compress to a target file size.
Read step-by-step guides
Use focused guides for common targets such as 50 KB images, 100 KB PDFs, 300x300 photos, and 20 KB signatures.
